We only use sustainable wood

Sustainable

and legal wood for our crane mats

Our wood comes from West Africa, where we get it from specially selected sawmills, which have sustainable forest management as a basic concept. We adhere to a rotation period of 30 years based on a carefully written forest management plan. This plan describes where felling is allowed and from what diameter. Vulnerable areas and waterways are avoided as standard and agreements are made with local residents based on authentic rights. So you can be sure that the wood is 100% legal and sustainable.

Even after it has been cut, the beams are not treated with chemicals. As a result, they are ultimately 100% biodegradable and it is therefore not harmful to the environment if wood is left behind in nature.

Wood types

At Welex B.V. you can choose from different types of wood. Azobé is the most common type of wood here. This is the most suitable hardwood species for crane mats. The cross-grained fiber ensures that this wood does not crack but fray, which makes it extremely suitable for wear. In addition, it is resistant to all kinds of weather conditions, which results in excellent employability. In our range we also have Okan, Dabema and Basralocus as standard types of wood.

Sustainably harvested

Tropical hardwood only grows in tropical rainforests, which means that it can be a problem to cut the wood in a responsible manner because of damage to nature. At Welex Group, we believe that you should be able to supply as much honest and certified wood as possible to your customers. As a result, we started looking for a possibility to receive guaranteed legal wood. In the meantime, a large part of the tropical hardwood we receive is 100% legally harvested wood. This makes us progressive in the field of affordable, fair-harvested tropical hardwood.

Co2 neutral

Wood has the fantastic property of absorbing CO2 in its life cycle. One oak tree, for example, stores about 1,000 kg of CO2 per m3 of wood. The wood we use for our crane mats, Azobé, stores no less than 60% more CO2 than oak wood, namely 1,600 kg of Co2 (source: Centrum Hout).

Combination baffles

When it is important that you use a sustainable product, but it is just as important to reduce costs, Welex B.V. choose to have crane mats produced with a combination of Azobé wood and another tropical hardwood species. You can choose from Okan, Dabema and Basralocus or a mix of these. To guarantee the best quality-price ratio, we provide a core of Dabema or Basralocus and the outsides are made of Azobé or Okan.
